Year Two Blogs

Week beginning 4th November 2019

Welcome back to the second half of the Autumn term in Year 2! This week in English we have been learning all about who Guy Fawkes was, the Gunpowder plot and writing their own 'Bonfire Night' poetry using their five senses. In Maths the children have been revising number bonds to 10 and 20 and playing a game called 'Hit the button' (See link below). In Art this week, the children worked on the netbooks to create their own firework safety poster and in Geography the children enjoyed using 'Google Earth' to locate landmarks in London such as 'The Houses of Parliament', 'The Shard' and 'The Royal Exchange'.

Week beginning 21st October 2019

This week in Year 2 the children have been busy finishing their topic work all about dinosaurs. The children have loved this topic and we hope that our next half term's topic which is all about 'Brilliant Buildings'will be just as exciting! In English the children wrote some great tongue twister poems with alliteration. We had such fun thinking of funny phrases to write. Here are a few examples:'Tom the terrible T-Rex tripped on a table', 'Twenty-two Triceratops tap-danced on a Tuesday' 'On Saturday Sam the Stegosauraus sat silently for soup'. Try and have a go at some more at home. It was lovely to see you all at our parent evenings this week and we hope that all the Pottery Pal dinosaurs are settling into their new home well. Wishing you all a lovely half term and we look forward to seeing you back at school on Tuesday 5th November.

Week beginning 14th October 2019

What a fantastic Harvest Festival it was on Thursday afternoon and how proud we are of all our Year 2 children. The singing, playing of instruments, art work and speaking out loud was really wonderful. It was so great to see so many of you able to join us in the celebrations and thankyou very much for all your food donations. We have had a fabulous week - the pottery pal dinosaurs are back and look amazing! We will be setting them free during our two parent evenings next week. We think you will be very impressed! On Friday morning we were so lucky to visit St Crispin's School to listen to the poet and author Joseph Coelho. The children came back so enthusiastic about his poems and we are hoping to try out a few of his ideas when we write our own dinosaur poems next week. The link below gives you an example of some of Joseph's poems and approach to writing.

Week beginning 7th October 2019

We had a great time on Friday afternoon when Jackie and Jill from Pottery Pals visited Year 2 with the dinosaurs we had chosen a few weeks ago. The children enjoyed using the special coloured paint and applying it to their dinosaur. They were taught to apply a base colour first and then to use the smaller brush to add detail to their model. At the end of the session the children carefully placed their dinosaur back into the packing box ready to be taken to the special kiln at Pottery Pals. The dinosaurs will be returning to us next week - we can't wait to see how they've turned out!

Week beginning 30th September 2019

In Science the children have been thinking about the different types of habitats for dinosaurs. The children are becoming so knowledgeable and are amazing us with their dinosaur facts and information. It's wonderful to see the children so enthusiastic with their learning and keen to know more. In PSHE this week we talked about the different ways to welcome a new child. The children came up with some lovely ideas and made posters (play with them, show them around the school, help them if they are upset, say hello to them and include them in their games). Next Thursday (10th October) is World Mental Health Day - on this day we will be thinking and focussing on the importance of 'kindness'.  Have a wonderful weekend and see you Monday!

Week beginning 23rd September 2019

What a fun and busy week we've had in Year 2. The children watched and took part in their own erupting volcano experiment in Science, made clay fossils in Art and learnt all about Mary Anning in English. In Maths the children were taught about 'partitioning' and used this strategy to add numbers together. (43 + 25 =? 40 + 20 = 60, 3 + 5 = 8, 60 + 8 = 68) Partitioning involves splitting the numbers into smaller units to make them easier to calculate. Have a go at the following calculations at home and see if you can use the partitioning method.                        (32 + 41 = ? 45 + 23 = ? 74 + 12 = ?) The children have been given their new spellings to learn at home. Their set of words will link to their letters and sounds sessions. Please help your child to learn these words and remind them to bring back their red spelling books ready for Thursday when we will test them in class.  Thank you smiley

Week beginning 16th September 2019

This week we have had a fantastic visit from Annie and 'The Life Bus'.  The children learnt about different parts of the body and became feeling detectives as well as meeting Harold the Giraffe and friends. The Art work on display is looking really wonderful along the corridoors in school. Willow class have been working with collage and have produced some amazingly realistic dinosaur eyes. Cedar class have been busy painting sunsets and cutting out dinosaur silhouettes. (please see photos below) Year 2 are proving themselves to be an extremely creative bunch. Next week, the children will be learning all about the famous fossil hunter 'Mary Anning'. See if you can find out some facts about her  and write them down - we would love to hear them!

Week beginning 9th September 2019

In Year 2 the children have been reading 'Harry and the Bucketful of Dinosaurs' and 'Harry and the Dinosaurs say "Raahh!". We are enjoying the stories and have been writing simple sentences using capital letters and full stops and have been encouraging the children to add describing words. We have also been thinking about what the different characters from the books are saying and writing in speech bubbles. In Maths, we have been learning about Hundreds, Tens and Ones. We have been partitioning 2 and 3-digit numbers and doing lots of counting and writing of numbers. We have started our Spanish lessons once again with Senora Clays and the children's singing in the Music lessons led by Mrs Brown is sounding wonderful.

Week beginning 2nd September 2019
Welcome to our Year 2 page. It's great to be back! We hope that you all had a lovely, relaxing summer holiday. It was wonderful to read all the children's exciting holiday news in English last week and hear about all the different activities and places that they visited during their 6 weeks off school. The children are settling into their new classes and routines very well and looking very smart indeed. Next week, there will be more information on what the children are learning and ways to support them at home. Thank you for your support.
